Back in March, Verity Garrington walked 100,000 steps in 24 hours and raised a fantastic £1,105 for IDAS.

Verity has received support from IDAS in the past, and describes us as an ‘incredible’ charity that is close to her heart. Like many of the people we support, Verity wanted to do something to raise awareness of the vital work that we do, as well as funds to help us reach more people subject to abuse and violence.

Verity initially thought she’d be taking on her challenge alone and mapped out a 2 ½-hour route around York that took into consideration street lighting (she would be starting at 4am) and traffic. However, Verity runs a women’s only fitness and health bootcamp in York and, when she mentioned her plans to her members, was overwhelmed with offers of support.

Verity set up a JustGiving page, began posting on social media, and contacted local press who featured her story, including links so that readers could support and make a donation.

On the day of the challenge, Verity and five friends walked 48 miles in just 18 ½ hours, making a total of 8 laps of the route she’d planned. Others joined for part of the challenge, and it became really sociable which helped to her to stay motivated and on track, with drivers beeping their horns and passers-by shouting words of encouragement. Throughout the day, Verity posted updates to her Instagram stories so friends, family and supporters could follow her journey and donate.

Verity said, "I'm not going to sugar coat it, it was brutal. Was it hard? Absolutely. Do I regret it? Not one bit. The support was incredible throughout, from new faces to walk with us to people beeping car horns. I honestly can’t thank everyone enough. I'm forever grateful and unbelievably proud."

Thank you Verity, we’re so grateful for your support!

As the largest specialist charity in Yorkshire, each year IDAS supports over 10,000 women, men and children affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence. In addition to our mainstream funding, we need to raise around £100,000 each year so that we can continue providing our vital, lifesaving services.
