People often think that the rural areas of North Yorkshire are safe and that domestic abuse is a city problem. Well, this month we counted our 1,000 referral to our Rural Outreach team over the last couple of years. People who are suffering abuse in rural areas often suffer additional problems in terms of being able to access support. Transport and access to services can be a problem. There can also be worries that information won’t be kept confidential by local services. For instance we supported one woman who didn’t tell her GP what was happening because her husband used to play golf with him. So, we are proud that we have been able to offer support to so many people who otherwise would have isolated and fearful of coming forward.
